Mullett Township

MULLETT TOWNSHIP

About Mullett Township

Mullett Township (named after surveyor John Mullett) is a general law township located in Cheboygan County at the “Tip-of-the-Mitt” in Michigan’s lower peninsula. Mullett Township was originally part of Burt Township, but on June 28, 1916, the local leaders voted to “set off” Mullet (notice it is spelled with only one “t”). Later on January 28, 1917, Cheboygan County officially certified the vote, and the first township meeting was held April 2, 1917, in Topinabee at the Spencer Hotel. Today the township has approximately 1300 residents. Because the area is one of Michigan’s busiest resort areas, that number greatly increases in the summer months. A unique geographical feature of the township is that it is roughly divided in two by Michigan’s fourth-largest inland lake, Mullett Lake. Thus, traveling from the east side of the township to the west requires leaving the township and traveling around Mullett Lake. Topinabee (an unincorporated village), in the west section, is the location of the Township Hall and the township’s only commercial area. The township can be easily reached by exiting I-75 at Exit 310 to reach the east section and Exit 313 off I-75 to reach the west section.

The township’s east side includes Boy Scout Road with a picnic area, pavilion, swimming area, and dock.

The west side of the township in Topinabee has a playground, softball field, basketball, and tennis court located at the old school off Topinabee Mail Route Road. In addition, a boat launch is located off M-27 just north of Topinabee.

Next to the public library, there is a swimming beach with an ADA ACCESSIBLE PATHWAY MAT and a public boat dock, picnic area, restrooms, and parking for the North Central DNR Bike/Snowmobile Trail.
